Plans for the Stars in Bishop’s Castle
The Bishop’s Castle & District Community Land Trust is delighted to announce it has bought the former Stars Newsagent at 68-70 Church Street! After more than five years of lying empty and neglected, with your help we can start the exciting work on bringing this important and valued building back to life, to play its part once again in the life of our town.
Planning permission is being sought to create two flats for affordable rent, and we expect building work to commence in early summer. There is also a proposal to convert part of the shop into premises for a Community Hub. Renovation will include restoring the shopfront so it is in keeping with others in the town centre and re-opening the blocked-up front door. At the rear, rebuilding will replace a lean-to roof and make a second bedroom upstairs.
The work is anticipated to cost in the region of £210,000. The Trust can secure an £80,000 mortgage from the Ecology Building Society and Shropshire Council has pledged £40,000. Other grant opportunities are also being pursued.
We need to raise around £66,000 towards the building work and hope that many residents of Bishop’s Castle and further afield will want to help us to reach that target. Please click here to give whatever you can.
